The Alexandria Choral Society strives to be an accessible organization that represents the diverse culture of Alexandria. We are passionate about fostering an inclusive community that promotes and values diversity and equity for our singers, audiences, partners, and broader community. We believe that organizational commitment to diversity in age, race, ethnicity, religion or creed, economic status, gender identity, sexual orientation, physical and mental ability, and perspective is essential to successfully produce and share our work.
Our programs, performances, and auditions for membership are open to any and all who care to participate. It is our goal to provide opportunities for collaboration, input, and enjoyment for people across Alexandria and the D.C. region. ACS understands that to be engaged, people must feel invested and valued, and we understand that diversity of ideas, perspectives, and experiences is a metric of quality and optimizes harmony, ensuring that ACS remains and grows as a valuable part of the local community.
Diversity of Repertoire Statement
ACS recognizes the diverse community of Alexandria and strives to represent our community musically.
-
ACS will intentionally include in its programming music written by composers from marginalized populations such as BIPOC, women, and members of the LGBTQIA+ community.
-
Selected music should encompass a variety of lived experiences, regardless of the identity of the composer.
-
ACS should strive to bring new voices into the choral repertoire by intentionally programming music by lesser known composers.
-
ACS strives to include choral music from a variety of cultures and languages from around the world to expand the choral literacy of our singers and our audience.
